What is anxiety?

Have you ever felt like you were nervous about something? You felt afraid and is if something bad might happen. You think:

  • What if something bad happens?
  • What if I embarrass myself?
  • What if everyone sees me?
  • What if I fail?
  • What if I can't do it?
  • What if he / she is there?
  • What if I panic and make a fool of myself?

And when you think those things, it feels like:

  • your heart is racing
  • you can't catch your breath
  • you are dizzy or light headed
  • you need to go to the toilet
  • your hands are sweating
  • your face is burning hot
  • your mouth is dry

And you do things like:

  • cancel plans at the last minute only to regret it later
  • avoid people or places that 'set you off'
  • stay home when you'd normally go out
  • fight with loved ones because you're already wound up and it only takes something small to trigger a big reaction
  • take time off work

Imagine what it will be like when you are able to sleep at night without tossing and turning, when you can have brunch with your friends, shop when it's busy and manage symptoms as / if they arise instead of being managed by them.

The good news is that anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions because it's highly responsive to therapy. In fact, the latest research shows that you can learn to manage this condition within around 10 counselling sessions. Research also shows that the thing that's most important in getting better, is the relationship you experience with your therapist. It doesn't matter so much if they are a Psychologist, a Social Worker or Counsellor.

At All Psyched Up in Frankston we have Psychology, Mental Health Social Work, Family Therapy, Counselling and more to help you on your journey.
